Meet Sands Hall

Sands Hall has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was 14, when, as a birthday present, her father purchased, for $150 from a hard-up student at UC Berkeley, a OOO-18 Martin. This is the battered wonderful guitar she still uses. She also plays a bit of mandolin and has recently begun to study the fiddle. She’s had an extensive career as director and actor and is the author of two plays, an adaptation of Alcott’s Little Women and the comic drama Fair Use (if you’re interested in Wallace Stegner you might ask her about it); a novel, Catching Heaven, which is set in the Southwest and is a Random House Reader’s Circle Selection; a book of writing essays and exercises, Tools of the Writers Craft; and assorted published essays and stories. She’s currently a professor of creative writing at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is the Founding Editor of the F&M Alumni Arts Review.   She’s never stopped playing and singing, though, and as the year of the Water Dragon rolled around, she decided it was time to focus again on her music. She asked Maggie if she wanted to go on a tour of the Southwest—to which Maggie immediately replied, “Yes! About time!”

Thanks, dearest Kate. It’s just so good to be focusing on the music, and the songs and the singing. I am very lucky in my partner, Maggie. She’s an extraordinary musician, woman, friend. Yes, I’ll be back in August for the fall semester. We’ll make a plan — maybe meet in NYC or in a town equidistant from each of us where we can play for the weekend. Love love love. Thanks for reading the posts!
