SUMMARY:Ex-Scientology Author Convention: Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:What a marvelous idea! Hosted by Janis Gilham Grady—author of Commodore’s Messenger (Volume I: A Child Adrift in the Scientology Sea Organization and II: Riding Out the Storm with L. Ron Hubbard)\, about her years on the ship with Hubbard— this event brings together authors who were once Scientologists. Most of them held prestigious positions in the Church and yet found a way to leave. I’m honored to join them. Includes Bent Corydon\, who wrote Messiah or Madman: The True Story of L. Ron Hubbard (a book that helped me stay determined to leave); John Duignan\, author of The Complex: An Insider Exposes the Covert World of the Church of Scientology; Jefferson Hawkins\, author of the very compelling Counterfeit Dreams; Marc Headley\, author of Blown For Good: Behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology; Nancy Many\, who—besides Bent Corydon—led the way with her horrifying memoir\, My Billion Year Contract: Memoir of a Former Scientologist; Jesse Prince\, author of The Expert Witness: My Life at the Top of Scientology; Kay Rowe\, author of Over the Edge- A Pawn in the Scientology Money Machine; and Chris Shelton: Scientology: A to Xenu: An Insider’s Guide to What Scientology is Really All About. \n \n

SUMMARY:MUSICAL MONDAYS at the Library: SONGBIRDS! with Maggie McKaig and Sally Ashcraft
DESCRIPTION:Delighted to be performing with Maggie McKaig and Sally Ashcraft as The Songbirds. We’ve been having such fun putting this set together\, creating three part harmonies on a delightful variety of songs\, by songwriters such as the McGarrigle Sisters\, Elizabeth Cotton\, Utah Phillips\, and Richard Fariña\, as well as a few originals by Maggie and Sands. We’ll be joined on a number of the tunes by Luke Wilson on banjo and dobro and Murray Campbell on violin and oboe: we think the combination of all these lines of harmony and rhythm are pretty lovely. Plus there’s fun to be had:  Don’t you think you need to see us all singing and playing in goggles—and to find out why? The concert is free. \nMusical Mondays is a series hosted by InConcert Sierra at the amphitheater at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City. The effort of the free series is to educate children to the joys of music\, but I attended the first one\, featuring Beaucoup Chapeaux\, and there were many adults also having an abundantly good time. I hope that you’ll be inspired to bring your cup of coffee and join the fun. It’s just a great way to start the day—and the week.

SUMMARY:FAIR USE at the North Star House
DESCRIPTION:FAIR USE\, a play by Sands Hall\, explores the controversy surrounding the unattributed use Wallace Stegner made of the life and writings of Mary Hallock Foote in creating his novel\, Angle of Repose. (Mary and her husband Arthur lived in the North Star house for 30 years of their amazing lives.) This is a fundraiser for the North Star House\, as well as memorial to the dearly loved Peggy Levine\, who worked so hard and successfully to restore  the house and whose vision helped create the community center it has become. This staged reading features Kim Culbertson\, Lois Ewing\, Les Solomon\, Tom Taylor\, Sharon Winegar\, and T.E. Wolfe.
